Mao Shimada completes the three straight wins in Japan Juniors.
This feat was accomplished by only two skaters in the past;
Shizuka Arakawa in 1996
Miki Ando in 2003.
Silver was won by Ikura Kushida and Bronze, by Rena Uezono.
I wish that Ami Nakai will quickly recover from her injury.

Mao Interview
She was worried today since she did so badly in the SP.
She really wanted to nail both 3A and 4T, since she was playing catch up.
She now has a "feel" for 3A, but not yet for 4T.
In practice she aims to land at least one of the two big jumps, since falling on both will not make her competitive with other skaters.
Last season Mao was really nervous at Senior Nats, however since this time it is going to be her second time she should be less nervous and hopes to finish higher than last year's third.

After reviewing BS Fuji coverage, they included a short clip of Ami Nakai landing clean 3A and coming off the ice beaming. Since she was wearing her Free costume and there were other skaters in the background, so I presume this clip was from 6min warm-up prior to her FP.
Perhaps, her injury is not as severe as one is led to expect.
Wishing Ami quick and complete recovery.

JSF decided NOT to invite Ami Nakai nor Mayuko Oka to the Senior Nationals.
Seven skaters invited to compete at Senior Nationals are;
Mao Shimada, Ikura Kushida, Rena Uezono, Yo Takagi, Ayumi Shibayama, Haruna Murakami and Kinayu Yokoi.
Although JSF announced top 8 will be considered for the invite, Riria Kono (7th) as Novice was expected not to be invited. Since Mao Shimada was seeded due to her bronze at Senior Nationals, some fans were expecting 9th Mayuko Oka and 10th Ami Nakai would be invited, but JSF declined to do so.
For the Youth Olympics in Korea, JPN Womens Team will be Mao Shimada and Yo Takagi with Ikura and Ayumi as alternates. (Edited to add: Evidently Rena Uezono is age ineligible, too young.)

Japan Intercollegiate Championships concluded last weekend.
Men: (The field was reduced due to WD by Shun Sato, Tatsuya Tsuboi and Amin Kataise)
1. Yuma Kagiyama (Chukyo U) 1,1 283.00
2. Sumitada Moriguchi (Doshisha U) 2,3 247.87
3. Nozomu Yoshioka (Hosei U) 3,2 245.65
4. Kosho Oshima (Meiji U) 4,4 223.51
5. Takumi Sugiyama (Okayama U) 204.46
6. Lucas Tsuyoshi Honda (Doshisha U) 200.25
Congratulations to Yuma Kagiyama!
Evidently, for Moriguchi and Honda who are expected to concentrate on Pairs in the future, all other skaters and coaches applauded them on their "final" singles skate, which brought tears to their eyes, understandably.
Women:
1. Yuna Aoki (Nihon U) 1,2 193.61
2. Rion Sumiyoshi (Meiji U) 2.3 193.18
3. Rinka Watanabe (Hosei U) 4,1 191.21
4. Saki Miyake (Okayama Science U) 6,4 178.84
5. Rino Matsuike (Chukyo U) 8,5 175.76
6. Mana Kawabe (Chukyo U) 5,8 171.96
7. Kinayu Yokoi (Chukyo U) 3,9 168.58
8. Yuna Shiraiwa (Kansai U) 11,6 167.78
9. Maria Egawa (Meiji U) 9,7 165.51
Congratulations to Yuna Aoki!
It is rather worrying that neither Rino Matsuike nor Mana Kawabe skated all that well, even in no pressure competition like this. ETA: Chukyo University did win the Women. Evidently, this is important to maintain scholarship status.

Japan Inter-high school championships will be held this weekend.
The competition is singles only and "Junior" rules will be applied for this event.
There are 34 (after two WD, one of them Tsudoi Sudo) Men skaters and 107! Women skaters taking part.
For Women, three SP groups (A on Jan 18, B on Jan 19 and C on Jan 20) of 35-36 skaters each will take place and top 18 skaters will advance to Free Program on January 21st.
Notable skaters in each SP group are;
SP Group A Yurina Okuno
SP Group B Ikura Kushida, Mone Chiba
SP Group C Yo Takagi, Hana Yoshida, Ayumi Shibayama
It is interesting that Mone and Hana who competed as Seniors exclusively this season, are actually skating Junior programs in this event. Evidently, this event is "big deal" to skaters in high school.
It is noted that both Mao Shimada and Rena Uezono are still in Junior High, so they will compete in Inter Junior High event to be held later.
In Mens, Kao Miura (also first time Junior this season) and Shunsuke Nakamura are scheduled to take part.

The Inter-high school Championships were concluded on 21st January.
One correction: In both Men and Women top 24 skaters in SP was allowed to advance to Free skating, this year. It seems that last season it was only 18, due to lingering effects of COVID protocols.
In Women, the top six finishers were;
1. Hana Yoshida 2,1 199.10
In FP (3A +2.40, 2A+3T, 3lo, 3F, 3Lz+3T +1.18, 3Lz, 3S+2A+1T+SEQ): 134.27
2. Mone Chiba 4,2 180.24
In FP (3F+3T +1.41, 2A, 2S, 3Lo<, 3F+2T+2Lo, 3Lz+2A+SEQ, 3Lz<): 120.53
3. Ikura Kushida 1,4 175.11
4. Ayumi Shibayama 3,3 174.18
5. Yo Takagi 5,6 158.41
6. Yurina Okuno 6,5 158.40
Congratulations to Hana Yoshida, for the win and also for nailing 3A in the free. Mone Chiba came back from rather lethargic 4th place SP, but 2S and two UR calls limited her FP score. Ikura Kushida had a stellar SP but did not do so well in the FP.
In Men, the top five were;
1. Kao Miura 1,1 236.92 He had one fall (1A+3A+SEQ fall) in the FP.
2. Shuntaro Asaga 3,2 185.35
3. Maiaki Mishima 4.3 177.17
4. Ryoga Morimoto 5,4 175.80
5. Shunsuke Nakamura 2,5 175.65 Shunsuke had a nightmare FP with 5 Falls.
Congratulations to Kao Miura.
Generally, high school skaters heading to Senior events (Hana, Mone and Kao) skated decently, but Ikura and Shunsuke heading to Junior Worlds did not skate well in the Free programs, unfortunately.

It is now old news, but National Winter Sports Champioships (Each prefecture fields a team) was held in Tomakomai, hokkaido on 27-31 January.
Evidently, the national budget allocation to each prefecture depends on how well they do in this competition, so each prefecture wants the best skaters to compete for them. This was why Hyogo prefecture womens team, last season, were composed of the World Champion and GPF/4CC Champion, Kaori and Mai. This year only Kaori competed, since 4CC and Youth Olympics representatives were not here.
Results; Final Ranking, Name, SP and Free Ordinals, Total Score of top skaters are as follows.
Seniors:
Women
1. Kaori Sakamoto (Hyogo) 1,1 225.02
2. Rino Matsuike (Aichi) 2,2 202.32
3. Rion Sumiyoshi (Tokyo) 3,3 197.67
4. Wakaba Higuchi (Tokyo) 6,4 194.11
5. Saki Miyake (Okayama) 5,5 193.52
6. Maria Egawa (Fukuoka) 4,6 192.67
7. Mana Kawabe (Aichi) 9,7 167.67
8. Yuna Aoki (Kanagawa) 7,8 167.37
Top six skated quite well. Mana and Yuna did not have good competition.
Tokyo won, and Aichi was second.
Men
1. Kazuki Tomono (Osaka) 6,1 252.63
2. Nozomu Yoshioka (Hyogo) 4,3 226.61
3. Nobunari Oda (Osaka) 3,4 226.25
4. Sena Miyake (Okayama) 1,5 222.78
5. Kosho Oshima (Saitama) 2,6 219.39
6. Tatsuya Tsuboi (Aichi) 15,2 217.93
Kazuki won due to good Free skate. Osaka won with good support by venerable Oda.
Juniors:
Women
1. Hana Yoshida (Kyoto) 4,1 188.81 (Nailed 3A +2.13, but 3Lz+3T<, 3Lz< limited her score)
2. Ikura Kushida (Aichi) 1,2 184.76 (Fell on 3S, 3Lz+3T<, 3Fq+2T+2Lo limited her score)
3. Ayumi Nakao (Tokyo) 2,3 178.22
4. Aiko Iwamoto (Hokkaido) 5,4 165.60
5. Ayumi Shibayama (Kyoto) 3,6 159.34
6. Yurina Okuno (Tokyo) 8,5 156.25
Hana and Ikura did quite well, though there were some errors. Kyoto won.

2. Shunsuke Nakamura (Aichi) 2,2 203.65 (4Tq and 3F!)
3. Ryoga Morimoto (Kyoto) 3,3 188.72
4. Seigo Tauchi (Aichi) 4,4 184.91
5. Daiya Ebihara (Tokyo) 5,5 179.62
6. Ibuki Ogawara (Okayama) 9,6 168.68 (He dances with Sumire Yoshida)
Kao won but it was not clean skate. Tokyo won based on tie breaker, Aichi was second.

Another old news, FYI.
Japan Junior High Skating Championships were held on Feb 3-6, in Nagano.
Junior rules are applied and only the top 18 advance to the free.
Top skaters rank, Name, Junior High, SP and Free Ordinals and Total Scores are as follows.
Men:
1. Taisho Nishino (Kanagawa JH) 1,1 202.13
2. Hayato Okazaki (Somei Gakuin JH) 4,2 186.18
3. Yujin Takeda (Toriyano JH) 5,3 181.21
4. Hiroto Hanai (Miya JH) 2,7 175.83
5. Daiya Ebihara (Nakano #2 JH) 3,5 175.63
6. Sena Takahashi (Seisa Nagoya JH) 14,4 174.36
7. Seigo Tauchi (Shiroyama JH) 6,6 169.81

Women:
Since Mao Shimada competed in Youth Olympics, she was not expected to compete here. Just before the start of the event, Rena Uezono and Haruna Murakami WD without any reasons given. It was expected that returning Ami Nakai or Kaoruko Wada would take the title. The unexpected reults were;
1. Mei Okada (Kira JH) 4,1 176.33 (In free, nailed 3Lz+3T, only error was 3F!)
2. Kaoruko Wada (Maezu JH) 2,2 172.62
3. Ami Nakai (Minami Gyotoku JH) 1,4 171.43 (In free, 3A<, 3Lz+3Tq, 3F!, 1A, 3Lo< limited her score)
4. Kei Yamada (Hirono JH) 3,3 169.82
5. Mayuko Oka (Sapporo Teine Higashi JH) 5,6 158.22
6. Aiko Iwamoto (Tomakomai Shiratori JH) 8.5 157.12
Perhaps, it was too soon for Ami Nakai to compete, after her injury.
